Table of Contents

Before applying for the JEE Main exam, both aspirants & their parents should know the JEE Main eligibility criteria. The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is a highly competitive test that grants students access to some of India’s top engineering institutes, such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs). The exam is split into two stages: JEE Main and JEE Advanced, each serving distinct functions and aimed at different groups of candidates.

This article explores the structure and significance of both stages of the JEE exam, along with JEE main eligibility criteria, age limit, number of attempts, and many more. Additionally, it gives importance to the unique strategies employed by SPM & Lalans Coaching in helping students succeed in their JEE preparation journey.

Types of Joint Entrance Examination (JEE)

Before knowing the JEE Main eligibility criteria, let’s know the two different types of JEE exams.

A. JEE Main

  • Purpose: JEE Main is the first stage of the examination, primarily for admission to NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs. It also functions as a qualifying exam for JEE Advanced.
  • Conducting Body: The National Testing Agency (NTA) administers JEE Main multiple times a year, allowing students to choose the best score.
  1. JEE Main Eligibility Criteria 2025: Age Limit
  • No Age Limit: As per the JEE Main eligibility criteria released by the NTA, there is no maximum or minimum age to apply for JEE Main. Candidates of any age can apply and appear for the JEE Main exam.
  1.  JEE Main Eligibility Criteria 2025: Educational Qualification
  • Candidates must have passed or be appearing for the Class 12th examination in 2023, 2024, or 2025 from a recognized national institute or board. This is a very important component of the JEE Main eligibility criteria.
  • At least five subjects should be included in the board exam, including Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry/Biology/Biotechnology/Technical Vocational subject.
  1.   JEE Main Eligibility Criteria 2025: Number of Attempts
  • Another important requirement of the JEE Main eligibility criteria is that a candidate can appear for JEE Main twice a year, meaning they get six attempts (three years x two sessions) to qualify for IIT JEE Advanced.

Various factors are required to meet for JEE Main eligibility criteria, including JEE Main eligibility marks, subjects in the qualifying exam, age limit, etc. The JEE Main eligibility criteria are given below.

Subjects in the qualifying examJEE main paper 1(B.E/Btech) – physics and maths as compulsory subjects and any one subject among Chemistry/Biology/Technical Vocational SubjectJEE Main Paper 2A (B.Arch)– Physics, Chemistry, and Maths as compulsory subjects in class 12JEE Main Paper 2B (B.Plan) – Mathematics as a compulsory subject in class 12.
Percentage of marksMinimum 75% marks in class 12 or top 20 percentile
JEE Main Number of attemptsCandidates can appear in JEE Main six times in three consecutive years after passing their class 12/qualifying examTwo attempts in a year
Exam SessionsHeld twice a year: January and April

B. JEE Advanced

  • Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced), the second stage of JEE, is a competitive exam held annually in India for the admission of students to IITs and other top engineering colleges.
  • Conducting Body – The exam is organized by one of the seven zonal IITs, namely IIT Roorkee, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, and IIT Guwahati.
  1. Age Limit
  • Candidates should have been born on or after October 1, 2000. Five years of age relaxation is given to SC, ST, and PwD candidates, ie, these candidates should have been born on or after October 1, 1995.
  1. Educational Qualification
  • A candidate should have appeared for the Class XII (or equivalent) examination for the first time in either 2024 or 2025 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects. Candidates who had appeared in the Class XII (or equivalent) examination for the first time in 2023 or earlier are NOT eligible to appear in JEE (Advanced) 2025, irrespective of the combination of subjects attempted/offered.
  1.   Number of Attempts
