Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh, started its journey on 3rd November 1947, which makes it one of the oldest medical colleges in the region. Initially, the first MBBS batch began in the year September 1947 with only 6 students. Subsequently, in February 1948, during the tenure of Governor Sri Prakash, the inauguration of  the hospital wings of the college occured.

However, after the Assam earthquake of 1950, all departments and outpatient services shifted to the present Barbari campus. Initially, the college offered 65 MBBS seats, whereas today Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh, admits 170 students every year, with an approved total intake of 200 MBBS seats.
