The NEET Counselling 2025 process has taken a new turn as the National Medical Commission (NMC) has once again updated the number of MBBS and BDS seats available across the country. This time, the seat count has seen a reduction of 50 seats, bringing the total number of MBBS seats to 128,875 for the academic year 2025–26.

Earlier, the NMC had announced 128,925 seats, but after a fresh review, the revised seat matrix now confirms the updated figure. Interestingly, even though there has been a small drop, the overall number of MBBS seats in India has increased significantly this year, marking an addition of 11,350 new seats, including those in AIIMS and JIPMER.

However, the previous matrix reflected a rise of 11,400 seats, showing a difference of 100 seats from the newly approved list. Moreover, 456 seats were not renewed for the 2025–26 academic session, slightly affecting the total capacity.

Why the NEET Counselling 2025 Update Matters

NEET Counselling 2025

This update is highly crucial for aspirants preparing for NEET Counselling 2025, as even a small change in the seat matrix can influence cut-offs, category-wise availability, and admission chances. The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has already begun Round 3 of counselling, and with the updated seat data, candidates need to make informed choices while filling their preferences.

Moreover , round 3 is especially important for those students who either did not receive a seat in earlier rounds or wish to upgrade to a better college.

AIQ vs State Counselling – What’s the Difference?

Understanding the difference between AIQ and State Counselling is vital for students participating in NEET Counselling 2025.

So , there are two distinct processes for seat allocation , which is AIQ (All India Quota) and State Quota. The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) manages the AIQ, which includes 15% of government college seats across India and 100% of seats in Deemed Universities, Central Universities, AIIMS, JIPMER, ESIC, and AFMC.

Meanwhile, the State Quota covers 85% of government medical seats and all private college seats in that respective state. So , the state authorities conduct the counselling under domicile-based rules.

Moreover , for students in NEET Counselling 2025, understanding these two systems helps them plan their options strategically and maximise their chances of getting a good medical college.
